We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.
An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The entire film is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
The couple face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.
