Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
